How to fix error 404 on android

Error 404 is a very common error that occurs when you try to open a site. However, this message is not always indicative of an actual website problem or your computer’s technical issues. You will see this error message if the website you want to visit has been moved or deleted. Sometimes it might also happen because of some technical issues on the server side or due to an issue with your internet service provider (ISP). In simple words, error 404 means there is no such page at all!

How to fix error 404 on android?

When you are trying to access a website and encounter an error 404 on android, it is usually due to one of the following reasons:

  • Check your internet connection. If your device is connected to Wi-Fi, try connecting via cellular data or vice versa. If this does not work, check if any applications are using bandwidth on your device by going into “Settings” > “Data usage” > “Data saver”. Here you can turn off background data usage for all apps or select individual apps that have been consuming too much data in the background without your knowledge.
  • Clear the cache and cookies from Chrome browser on Android device by going into Settings > Apps & notifications > Google Chrome > Storage & Backup and tapping Clear storage.

Clear the cache and cookies

To clear cache and cookies, go to Chrome://settings/clearBrowserData and click on the option that says ‘Clear Browsing Data’. Then, check the box next to “Cached images and files.” Finally, press the button that says ‘Clear Browsing Data’ at the bottom of your screen.

Check your internet connection

If your browser is open and you are able to visit other web pages, then it means that the issue lies in your internet connection. Make sure that you’re connected to a WiFi network and try using other devices like laptops or tablets.

If the above step doesn’t resolve the issue, then check whether there are any problems with your router or modem. You can refer to our guide on how to fix common router issues for more information on this topic.

Disable Proxy on Android

The second way to fix error 404 on android is by disabling proxy. If you have a proxy configured on your device, then it is possible that the same port number may be used for both proxy and VPN connections. In this case, you will encounter error 404 when trying to connect via VPN. If you want to use both VPN and proxy connections simultaneously, make sure that different ports are used for each connection type.

Update Google Chrome

You can also try to update Google Chrome. Visit chrome://settings/help in your browser and click Update Google Chrome. The download will start automatically, so wait for it to finish and try again.

Reset or reinstall Chrome

If you’re using Chrome on Android and have encountered a 404 error, one of the steps below should help.

To reset the browser, open Settings. Then choose Apps > Apps & notifications > Chrome app (or “Apps and services” if you’re running Android 8 or later). You should see a button to clear all data or force stop it. Choose this option to clear your settings and cache. Close the app afterwards.

If that didn’t work, try deleting the browser from your device and reinstalling it from scratch using this guide for reinstalling apps on Android devices: https://support.google.com/android/answer/6010244?hl=en&ref_topic=7002293

Conclusion

The error 404 means that the page you are trying to open cannot be found. It is usually displayed when a link on your phone is broken or when you are trying to access a website that no longer exists.
