Everything you need to Know about Drain Flies

Richard Brown June 13, 2025 Tech News Leave a Comment

Drains are the system that transports waste water away from our homes, into the external sewer system. Drain systems can encounter various issues, one of which is drain flies.

The scientific name psychodidae applies to all types of drain flies that live close to water. Their diet consists of polluted water, flower nectar, algae, bacteria, and fungi.

Drain Flies

Drain flies are tiny, moth-like creatures that are around 2-5mm long. They are also known as sewer gnats or sink flies. They are often found hovering above sinks and plugholes, or around bathroom drains.

Moisture, decay, organic debris, and stagnant water are all ideal conditions for drain flies. This is why clogged drains, shower or bath overflows, kitchen sinks, and bathroom drains are all common habitats for drain flies, who thrive in the conditions they provide.

Whilst drain flies do not spread disease or bacteria, they are unpleasant, and can reproduce at an alarming rate, meaning that a full-blown infestation can occur in a very short space of time.

Whilst adult drain flies only live for around 2 weeks, they reproduce constantly so they can soon become a well-established annoyance. These flies lay between 30 and 100 eggs at a time, which hatch within 48 hours. They then fully mature between 9 and 15 days old.

Drains should be kept clean and dry to avoid drain flies.

CCTV Drain Surveys

Since drains are out of sight, it can be very difficult to determine whether they are backed up with debris, grease, or dirt. Often when the problem does become apparent, it is already too late.

If you’re looking for a CCTV drain survey Coventry and the surrounding areas, experts such as https://www.wilkinson-env.co.uk/drainage-services-cctv-surveys-midlands/cctv-drain-surveys/coventry/ can use state of the art technology to view and inspect your system.

As well as identifying debris and blockages that may lead to issues with drain flies, or foul smells, a CCTV drain survey can also bring other issues to light. This may include tree root ingression, drain damage or collapse, and blockages.
