This year marks 10 years since Dean Kamen, creator of Segway and head of the company DEKA, started a major project with the aim of creating a robotic prosthesis, which integrate functions for a significant improvement in the quality of life of people who have suffered the loss of a limb; This is how in 2014 DEKA presented ‘Luke’ a bionic arm that has been improving over time.

In that 2014, Luke got the FDA approval for marketing in the United States, the detail was that there was a company that could help with production and logistics to make the arm, but finally DEKA is announcing a partnership agreement with Mobius Bionics will allow this robotic prosthesis to market before the end of 2016.

Since the announcement of Luke in 2014, the news that has emerged around this prosthesis have only been good because it started as an attractive bionic arm based on electromyography (EMG), which evaluates the electrical activity produced by muscles and with various wireless sensors, allow the user to perform complex movements and control very accurately.

Later in 2015 would make significant improvements in the way how to translate the movements, leading us to Luke was able to correct inclinations and strength, which would be easier to hold a glass of water or perform more complex tasks such as closing a zipper or climb a wall.

Luke is the first robotic arm FDA approved, this makes expectations are very high because there are a lot of people waiting to know the outcome of this prosthesis, which already has more than 10,000 hours of testing in almost 50 veterans all with excellent results.

Now the next step is the price and the conditions of sale, as being a device with so much technology and capabilities, not expected to be cheap, however, it is an important step for this type of technology will continue to develop and in a not too distant future costs become cheaper to reach a greater number of people.
